(mellow hip hop music) the colors really speak to me, and i like you know the ucla blue. my hair in the ponytail and the poof is kind of like my signature thing. i really like it. - i think the nil environment and experience has been really excellent for her as a sort of a four-year long kind of business internship, requiring her to think about who she is and how she wants to communicate who she is. - my dreams are to use my platform to impact others and be more than just a basketball player. - thank you. - international players like kamilla, they're not allowed to do work with the student visa that they are granted.
11:09 am
most of the things you do for nil's classified as that, and so therefore they can't do that without the possibility of having their visa revoked. - money for me is accomplishing my dreams because my first dream to come play basketball here, it was to give a better life to my family. - if she had nils, life would be totally different for her. it is a big disadvantage, but we just try like to not be focused on it and play and and give the best that she can. - all right, we comin'. let's go ladies. that like he could do it, but i couldn't. - [brent] princess. caitlin had a small pink bike, and we really hadn't taught her how to ride the bike, but we were teaching blake. - so, i like got out my pink bike, and i'm like, mom, take my training wheels off. let's go. - [anne] up, put your other foot up. - oh cate, now that blake's learned to ride, catie's givin' it a shot, and she's doing quite well. if my brother can do this without training wheels, i can do this without training wheels. - [anne] cate. - [brent] there she goes, yeah. look at that. pedal, pedal, there. there it is. - [anne] keep pedaling. - wow, look at that. catie, great job. - everything had to be a competition all the time. (crowd cheering) (referee whistle) - [game announcer] another sold out crowd files into carver-hawkeye arena on the university of iowa campus. the main attraction, caitlin clark, of course, and the fourth-ranked team in the country. - michigan state's really good. they're not ranked, but they're a really, really great solid basketball team. they played us really well. 11:38 am
11:39 am
(mellow music) - [reporter] caitlin clark continues to transcend the program in ways that once seemed impossible. for the first time in the history of iowa women's basketball, every game for the season is sold out. - [reporter] the average purchase price is $521. the highest ticket on stubhub is over $4,000. - [reporter] the caitlin clark invasion officially took over evanston tonight. - caitlin clark and the hawkeyes, this is the 11th time, folks, they've sold out on the road this season. (crowd cheering) - we've played in a sold out environment almost every single game, home or away.
11:40 am
- [game announcer] from the banks of the olentangy river in columbus, ohio, welcome to sunday big ten basketball, as the 18-1 iowa hawkeyes, winners of 15 in a row, get set to face off against a hot ohio state team. - goin' and playin' in other people's environments, it can be tough. (gentle ominous music) - when there's 15,000 people on the road cheerin' against you, it's a lot different than 2000. it just adds a whole nother element. - [game announcer] to find the shot that you want. one possession game, mcmahon, okay. (crowd cheering) - [game announcer] look at those long strides. - to keep this ranking, to perform at this utmost level every single night, and that can wear on you. - [game announcer] did it all afternoon. gets her own rebound. pumped up cotie mcmahon. (crowd cheering) give and go opportunity. davis keeps it. - yeah, they led by 12 with under nine minutes to go in the game,
11:41 am
and iowa just didn't play well down the stretch. - [game announcer] 10 to go on the shot clock. taylor. (crowd cheering) oh, four quarters just wasn't enough. so, we gotta keep on playin'. (referee whistle tweeting) overtime in columbus tied at 83. (referee whistle tweeting) (crowd cheering) iowa being patient. blocked by mikulasikova. mikulasikova holding the follow through. that's big time. (crowd cheering) (somber piano music) this ohio state buckeye team, and they have taken down the number two team in the country. - [game announcer] caitlin clark with 45 points. - when we lost the game, i think we were all kind of shocked. and then, we're leaving the court, and people just start coming onto the court.
11:42 am
we had never been a part of something like that. - [game announcer] as the hawkeyes suffer their first loss in big ten play. - ohio state fans stormed the court. caitlin's comin' off the court. she gets hit by a fan and falls to the ground. - i was just trying to get out of there, and didn't see her, and kind of collided pretty good. and then, we kind of just both fell over. kind of scary. could have caused a pretty serious injury to me, and knocked the wind out of me, but luckily my teammates kind of picked me up and got me off the court. and their ad already came and apologized to me. so, i really appreciate that, and you know, that's just what comes with the territory. - because caitlin is who she is, the reaction to anything that happens to caitlin is gonna be polarizing. - fans do not belong on the court ever. the nba, major league baseball, they don't do it. when somebody gets hurt, we're gonna get serious about it.
11:43 am
- i think we all have seen the caitlin clark effect on the ratings and the money and how much tickets are and everything. can we not get a **** somebody surrounding caitlin clark when maybe a bunch of ohioans are chargin'? - did she get a technical? - who? - [man] caitlin clark for that flop. - flop? - whoa. - when you're the best, people wanna tear 'em down. they wanna find something wrong with her. and that one just became, oh, she ran into the fan on purpose and faked it. like, that's the craziest thing i've ever heard. - did she flop? she accentuated the contact after. - (laughing) she threw her hands. i mean, she flopped. - everybody has an opinion. people thought i ran into her on purpose, which, why would i ever do that? i don't know. but, yeah, it definitely gets annoying. there's gonna be people that love you. there's gonna be people that hate you. there's gonna be a lot of people that wanna see you fail.
11:44 am
- if you're going to break a record, to me, if it's legitimate, you have to break that record in the same amount of time that that player set it. - nobody's takin' 40 shots a game like you see across the country. we're not that kind of team. - i hold great, or the levels of immortality or the pantheon, to when you win championships. - you can not go down as the greatest college basketball player of all time without winning a national championship. you can't do it. - you can stay off twitter. you can stay off instagram. you can mute people, block people, hide comments. it doesn't matter. eventually you're gonna see something. she sees what people say. i don't think anybody can understand the pressure she's under, the microscope she's under. - do i think i'm polarizing? yeah, probably. i feel like the way i like play the game, the way i carry myself, the things i can do on the court, it's probably a lot of things that a lot of people haven't seen before, specifically on the women's side of basketball. - whether they're rooting for her,
11:45 am
or they're rooting against her, that transcendence is what the game has needed. (traffic whooshing) - i leave to brazil on february 5th to go play for my national team. we're gonna be competing for the olympics. (gentle suspenseful music) - if we recruit an international player, we're gonna give them an opportunity to play for their national team because we want them to be olympians. she'll miss missouri, and she'll miss connecticut. i know it burns her up. (plane dinging)
11:46 am
(birds squawking) - it was a really hard decision. but also like i know my national team needs me. this is very important because brazil haven't been in olympics for a long time. - whenever like you talk about the olympics and your national team, like this is huge, and kamilla makes the difference in the brazilian national team. (gentle suspenseful music continues) (coach speaking in a foreign language) (coach speaking in a foreign language) (coach speaking in a foreign language) - she is the anchor of the brazilian national team,
11:47 am
and the hopes of your country are on your shoulders. (coach speaking in a foreign language) - i feel like there's not too many opportunities for kids that came from poor places like i did to be here. so, for me it's really, really, really important. (people chattering) (kamilla speaking in a foreign language) (man responding in a foreign language) (gentle piano music) (janete speaking in a foreign language) (jessica speaking in a foreign language) (jessica speaking in a foreign language) (jessica speaking in a foreign language)
11:48 am
- for me, it was really hard at the beginning because they used to make fun of me. they used to bully me, and i used to go home and cry and sometimes i used to just fight them because i was very electric. (jessica speaking in a foreign language) (jessica speaking in a foreign language) (jessica speaking in a foreign language) - when i play for the olympics qualifier, it is actually gonna be with my mom and my sister's
11:49 am
first time watching me play. (gentle piano music) (jessica speaking in a foreign language) (jessica speaking in a foreign language) (janete speaking in a foreign language) i just wanna go out there, play the best as i can so they can just be proud of me and see the woman that i'm becomin'. - [game announcer] the fiba women's olympic qualifying tournament. three teams will move on to the paris games. - the first two games were australia and serbia, two powers in women's basketball. they just fell a little bit short at the end of both those games,
11:50 am
which set up a must-win game against germany, where they had to win by at least eight points to qualify for the paris olympics. - [game announcer] it's the final game of fiba women's olympic qualifying tournament between brazil and germany. they played with a bunch of passion here on their home floor. the one thing they have not done is sent the crowd home happy with a victory. fiebich for three, and she drills it. a 9-0 start for germany, and they silence and stun this crowd. here she is battling, dontessi. goes back to the same move. cardoso flies in for the rebound. - [game announcer] what more can you ask for from a senior in college to come to your national team and play your heart out? (crowd cheering) and now she has 19 points and 11 rebounds. - [game announcer] two minutes to play in the game. brazil with a chance to go to paris. they lead by four. they have to win by eight.
11:51 am
satou sabally will go to the line. and kamilla cardoso just picked up her fifth foul and also shoved satou sabally in the back. wow. - [game announcer] you don't wanna see that, and that's from lack of experience from cardoso. this is something that she's gonna take away for the rest of her career. - [referee] disqualified foul, number 10 for pushing from the back. disqualified foul, number 10. - [game announcer] floater in the lane, missed it. followed her own and put it up and in. ties the game. and germany up one after the foul shot goes through. brazil's gonna run out of time at home, and germany are headed to paris. (crowd cheering) (somber piano music) (kamilla speaking in a foreign language)
11:52 am
(janete speaking in a foreign language) (somber symphony music) (janete speaking in a foreign language) - brazil is home, family.
11:53 am
it's the place where i grew up. but i feel like usa is the place where i got the opportunity to follow my dreams. (inspirational music) (janete speaking a foreign language) (bus engine humming)
11:54 am
. . . .
11:55 am
(crowd chattering) - [girls] clark, clark, clark, clark, clark. - [game announcer] arguably, this could be the most watched women's basketball game in history. (crowd cheering) (suspenseful music) - goin' into the nebraska game, caitlin wakes up. she's really sick. she's says to me, "i don't know if i can play it." - i felt awful. i had like completely sweated through the entire bedsheets. like, it was just really bad. i had like a gigantic ziploc bag full of every drug you could imagine. - [reporter] she's going for the national scoring record today. - [reporter] 39 for the ncaa all-time scoring record. - [reporter] here is the road to the record for caitlin clark. 38 to tie kelsey plum. 39 to have it all by herself. - she's like sittin' on the couch. she's like, "i have to play." i'm like, "yeah, you do.
11:56 am
"you have to play." (suspenseful music continues) - we got a little bit of adversity here. not a lot, but a little bit, right? - there's so many people that count on her, people who spent thousands of dollars on tickets to go to that game. they wanna see her get close to breaking the record, but they wanna see her perform. - there's nothin' as fun as goin' into somebody else's arena and ownin' it. - for me, like it was never an option. it was like i was playing no matter what. whether i was dying, i was gonna go out there and play. (suspenseful music continues) - [game announcer] how do you think nebraska will deal with caitlin clark today? - [game announcer] well, i think they're gonna give her different looks. - [game announcer] that's not the look that they wanted there. (referee whistle tweeting) clark to the bucket, two and a foul. caitlin clark throws a three. (crowd cheering) out of nowhere sometimes. - 39 is an insane amount of points.
11:57 am
it's kind a testament to her that i was like, i guess i gotta go to that game now because 39's pretty in the cards. (referee whistle tweeting) - [game announcer] two and a foul for caitlin clark. eight points for the record. will she or won't she? (suspenseful music) - fourth quarter hits. they're up 14. iowa starts to take their foot off the gas, and nebraska comes storming back. - [game announcer] the big ten freshman of the year keepin' that play alive. - [game announcer] and the foul. - you all right? all right. caitlin was exhausted. she was sick, missed practice the day before. we were ready to try to give her an iv at halftime. - [game announcer] this is way too tight of a game to be thinkin' let's take out caitlin. - [game announcer] caitlin clark has not scored here in the fourth. - nebraska was so motivated to win this game. - [coach bluder] no, no. (crowd cheering)
11:58 am
- [michael] they had never beaten her, specifically. - [caitlin] in the fourth quarter, i literally just lost all gas. - [game announcer] caitlin clark with five for the tie. it's no good. - the frustration of feeling like that game was one we should have won. that team is not better than us. are you **** kidding me? are you **** kidding me? - [coach bluder] we had a 14-point lead. pissed it away again. - [reporter] kelsey plum will remain number one in the record books for at least one more game as iowa suffers a disastrous fourth quarter collapse while caitlin clark plays maybe the single worst quarter of her entire collegiate career. - [coach bluder] you gotta earn it. you earn it in practice. you earn it through your preparation. you earn it by knowing your scouting report. you earn it by boxin' the **** out. iowa, one, two, three. - iowa. (drumbeat thundering) (gentle music)
11:59 am
- [man] omaha.
